How to Keep Happy Hour Going From Home

How to Keep Happy Hour Going From Home

Phase 2 openings: Many of the restaurants and bars below are in the beginning stages of opening for on site visitors. This blog focuses on take out options and has been updated for information as of July 2020.  It didn’t take me very long to figure out how to set up about 8 different video conferencing methods in order to keep up with all of my friends. The first question that usually comes up is “What are you drinking?” It’s an easy icebreaker to draw attention away from the stress and start to wind down for the evening. Because we are all working hard to support local business as much as we can, here are a few places offering pick up and delivery of your favorite drinks to start your virtual and patio happy hours off right.

McClellan’s Retreat: Dupont Circle

McClellan’s Retreat is a small, rustic whiskey bar with a killer happy hour offering $6 Old Fashioned. While things are closed, you can order drinks by email to pick up Tuesday-Saturday from 5 to 8 pm. Their full menu is available online and includes cocktails, beer, and wine. Plus, follow along on Instagram @mccretreat for bartending videos plus weekly specials. All orders must include a bag of popcorn.

Port City Brewery: Alexandria

Order your favorite beers from Port City Brewery by noon for same-day delivery or pick up from 3 to 6 pm. The delivery radius is 5 miles from the brewery and requires a $5 delivery fee plus a $47 order minimum.

Capo’s Deli: Shaw

I think I visited Capo’s Deli in Shaw for their amazing Italian subs for about 2 months before I realized it was a speakeasy. Order drinks from The Backroom on Grubhub or Doordash with one of their subs for pick up ($12/cocktail) or delivery ($15/cocktail). Follow them on Instagram @capospeakeasy (look, “speakeasy” is in the name!) for menu updates. I’ve found cold sandwiches refrigerate well. You might want to order a drink for the later afternoon and save the sub for lunch the next day. They also make good picnic food for when things are back to normal.

El Rey: U Street

El Rey is famous for its mantra “Taco and Tequila.” You can bring their happy hour to your home with a liter of their margaritas and other drink specials. Plus, find food specials like nachos and enchiladas. Follow them on Instagram @elrey_dc for all the updates.

One Eight Distilling: Ivy City

Stock your liquor cabinet with gin, vodka, whiskey, and bourbon from One Eight Distilling. Fine all your favorites plus house made hand sanitizer at the shop. Pick up times are 3 to 7 pm Monday-Friday and 1-5 pm Saturday-Sunday. Plus, up your bar game with drink recipes on their website and Instagram @oneeightd.

Chicken and Whiskey: 14th Street

Chicken and Whiskey is a popular, not-so-secret speak easy who touts fast casual chicken in the front, whiskey in the back. Well, with COVID-19, the whiskey has moved to the front for contactless ordering and pick up. Find great cocktails for two plus fun cocktails kits to make at home. Currently, the menu includes The 3 Hour Layover Kit with rum and ginger beer (makes 4) and The Signature Old Fashioned Kit (makes 12). All orders must include and food item. I’d recommend the pollo frito, their amazing chicken sandwich.

Supreme Core Cider: Ivy City

Is beer not your thing? Check out Supreme Core Cider who is delivering your favorite ciders (DC only) 7 days a week from 4 to 7 pm if you order by 3 pm. You can also pick up cider Friday & Sunday from 2 to 6 pm and Saturday from 12 to 8 pm. Check out their site for the latest options.

Colada Shop: 14th Street

Colada Shop is an adorable Cuban coffee shop with a rooftop that offers cocktails in the evening. Pick up cocktails to go like mojitos and pina coladas plus beer and bottles of wine. All alcohol orders must include at least 1 food item. Plus, look out for their new location at The Wharf – opening soon.

Right Proper Brewery: Brookland and Shaw
