The Smith Brings Neighborhood Specials to U Street
With roots in New York City, The Smith restaurant made its way to U Street earlier this year. While the restaurant is located right on bustling U Street, it is surrounded by more residential areas than its counterpart in Penn Quarter. The names means “the maker” which the folks at the restaurant interpret to mean the restaurant is a place for guests to use for every type of gathering. Its a place for brunch with friends, drinks with coworkers, dinner with mom, lunch with business partners – anything you can imagine. It is a place where all are welcome.
The Smith can be a little more expensive than some other options in the area. However, most of the dishes are easily shareable so it’s easy to try a few plates without spending too much. Plus, the restaurant offers daily, rotating deals that make it easy to try some of the dishes for a bargain price.
Shareable Dishes For Groups
One easy, shareable meal among friends is the spread below including toasted ricotta gnocchi with truffle cream, super gooey mac and cheese, and crispy brussel sprouts. This spread is perfect to warm up your crew.
If finger food is more your style, be sure to try the cute crab cake tots in their own personal dab of tarter sauce or the spicy salmon tartar. This location also offers a variety of pizzas that are easy to share. The Sauce ($15) was my favorite topped with pepperoni and chilies. Be sure to also try The Shroom ($16) with mushroom and truffle and The Clam ($17) with clams and calamari.

Deals and Food Specials at U Street
The Smith has a variety of locations but they wanted to make the U Street location feel more like a neighborhood bar with a menu locals will want to keep coming back to. One of my favorite draws to this location is $1 oysters after 10 pm everyday and during weekend lunch. That’s right, $1 oysters after 10 pm everyday. This is an incredible deal for fancy late night munchies.
Another amazing seafood deal is Lobster Night on Wednesdays where you can get this huge lobster for $23! It’s also worth noting the easy to share Spicy Fried Chicken with jalapeno cheddar grits. It’s priced at $42 and isn’t discounted but it’s a generous serving that could feed 2-3 people.
The U Street location also offers a complimentary brunch cocktail with purchase of a brunch entrée during both weekend brunch and weekday lunch. This is a nice alternative to bottomless drinks for those looking for a brunch deal but don’t want to drink too much.
Sweet Endings at The Smith
The Smith restaurant also offers plenty of desserts to keep the party going. Two note worthy desserts are the S’mores in a Jar and the Sticky Toffee Pudding. The S’mores in a Jar is a very sweet, super Instagramable dessert that will delight everyone at the table. My favorite however, is the pudding because it is less sweet but perfect to scratch that chocolate itch.
The Smith is open 7 days a week with food and drink specials rotating daily. Keep up with them on Instagram: @thesmithrestaurant.
